HORN ISLAND STINGERS WIN MIGI KOKAN 2009
In an all Horn Island final - Garragar fought hard but could not get back the early goal scored by Eribu Miskin. Horn Island Stingers played their way into the final by heading a pool of teams including Thursday Island Heat, Northern Peninsula Area and a rival team Horn Island Papou. Garragar won the pool competing against teams from Badu Island, Sacred Heart - Thursday Island and Thursday Island Baidham
The competition overall was very even with good skills and game sense being shown by the competitors generally. Migi Kokan began in 2008 with 5 team and in 2009 this compeetition saw close to 90 young people competing in 8 teams from 4 different communities across the Torres Strait Islands and NPA.
Many thanks must go to the Tagai State School on Thursday Island which hosted the carnival and provided a great carnival atmophere.
Many parents and suppoorters came to have a look and we thank the teachers, parents and coaches of these teams for giving their time and support to encourage the opportunities available through the program.
Eribu Miskin was named the carnival's best and fairest player while a sqaud of 24 young people was named to take part in a further development program and a team will be selected early in 2010 to be part of the Under 13 State Hockey Championships in Atherton in July 2010.
