Gulf -v- Torres/Cape Hockey Challenge

This is a special intitiative strengthening the Remote Hockey Pathways to Opportunity Program. Identified young people within the Gulf Savannah and Cape/Torres Island Program will come together from 3rd-5th July 2008 in Karumba.

The community of Karumba will host the first ever Gulf -v- Cape/Torres Hockey Challenge.

A squad of young people chosen from the 2008 Karumba Festival of Sport will play the Cape/Torres Hockey Squad as part of the Challenge. In addition - a series of mentoring programs will be run to support hockey in the Gulf.

This challenge will provide an avenue of opportunity for young people to play a series of hockey games on the upgraded Karumba Recreation Club grounds.

Hockey Queensland Remote Program will look to further identify hockey players and coaches and officials to progress them towards participation in teams competing at State Championships.

An exchange of hockey sticks painted by local artists will be a feature of the Program and displayed during the challenge.

This will be the first of an annual competition played alternatively in Gulf and cape/Torres communities and will provide opportunities to experience cultural exchanges as part of the Hockey competition.
