2011 No School No Play Hockey Launch - Cairns 21 May 2011

Hockey Australia and DEEWR entered a partnership designed to use sport in this case hockey to assist in the delivery of the important message that attending school regularly is very important to future opportunities in life.

Hockey Australia then joined with Hockey Queensland Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program to deliver this message to some of the more isolated and disadvantaged communities in North Queensland.

The Saturday evening Launch highlighted the programs being delivered including the Pass Australia and Remote and Indigenous Hockey Partnership which sees over 70 young indigenous students in grade 11 and 12 being involved in this program. These young people are learning hockey and becoming hockey coaches as part of vocation education opportunities. Young indigenous people will become coaches of  primary school students and lead them towards increased competition, healthy and active lifestyle choices as well as delivering the message of how important school attendance is to a successful future. As part of this program- Hockey Queensland and Pass Australia Inc will strike a special NO SCHOOL NO PLAY - Medal of Excellence for all those students in the program who attain 100% attendance. This will be presented at the conclusion of the year at graduation.

In addition, the NO SCHOOL NO PLAY Hockey program will be delivered into over 25 communities across Cape York and Torres Strait, Gulf Savannah and North West Queensland. In April 2011, the North West Hockey Program started its NO SCHOOL NO PLAY PROGRAM and will culminate in a competition in Mount Isa on 16th June 2011 named the NO SCHOOL NO PLAY CHALLENGE. It is anticipated over 60 young people will be eligible to attend having met school attendance outcomes set by the program. Similar competitions will be delivered in Karumba in September 2011 and Thursday Island in November 2011.
