Community support strengthening for hockey on Horn Island - Torres Strait

Since it's inception in 2008, the hockey program on Horn Island hasgained community support and is competitions are now being played all year round.

Horn Island Campus has been playing hockey all year long... They have already had two Horn Island competitiions. This competition involved 3 teams and 6-7 weeks of competitions.  the games had 20 minute halves.  There is also 4-5 students very keen in referreeing the game, They have been assisting Michale Alexander and Courtney Kirks father.  The 3 teams all know their positions and rules of the game. Additional rules like high sticks, hacking and the ball hitting the feet are also being enforced. There have been no exceptions and the players are responding well.

The 3 teams have consisted of 10 players in each team.  Horn Island Campus will be entering 3 teams this year in Migi Kokan Regional Hockey Competition..  Support has been received from the local ferry driver who will transport the extra team for free.  Horn Island Hockey have goals made by Donald Kirk and our hockey field is marked out for our compettions.  Our final game for each tournament was played under lights and there were dozens of supporting community members watching.  The local shop has donated some shirts for two of our teams...still working on the third teams uniforms.

The Torres Straits Rep team members from Horn Island are also helping teach the younger students the skills in hockey.  They are also creating the teams and assigning positions to each player. They were instructed to place people according to their strengths (attacker or defender etc)

Hockey is alive and well at Horn Island campus

Remote Hockey Program would like to thank Michael Alexander and all community supporters on Horn Island.
