Tagai Tafe and HQ Remote Hockey Program deliver images of the Torres Strait painted on Hockey Sticks
As part of the Q150 celebrations, the Torres Strait islander art students attending Tagai Tafe joined with HQ Remote Program to celebrate Islander culture and heritage in a program that combines sport and culture.
10 Hockey Sticks have been painted with images of turtles, dugong, crocodiles, stingrays and sharks representing the Islander links with the sea.
The images reflect the colours of the Torres Strait and the close connection between the sea creatures and the balance of life in the Torres Strait.
Painting these images on hockey sticks highlight the strong relationship the sport of hockey has with the Island communities of the Torres Strait.
The artwork will be produced into a CD and booklet and exhibitied at the Migi Kokan Hockey Competition 20th November 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations.
The artwork will also be displayed at the Champions Trophy 2009 in Melbourne as part of a program highlighting indigenous and islander hockey programs.
Hockey Queensland Remote program would like to thank the artists and members of Tagai Tafe who assisted in producing the Hockey Art for this Project.
