Cape York & Torres Strait
The Remote Program has a strong relationship with the local community, the school and the Active After School Program in these communities.- Some of these areas are the more remote of communities and by using a community partnership we can deliver more programs, give more support and give better value to the existing budget allocations.
- In the Torres Strait we have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Tagai College which will see us working towards a program of excellence, advance of participation programs and skill development.
- Education and Training becomes a high priority and we have already looked to run modified coach training for community people as part of the mentoring program.
- Hockey Art is also important and we are looking to incorporate clinics as part of the development initiative.
- We have a plan to incorporate this community into the Cape –v- Gulf Challenge development strategy and this will give the youth a pathway for competition and talent identification.
- We have established the Migi Kokan Cup a competition between schools on Thursday Island, Horn Island and Bamaga and in 2009 this is set to increase to include at least one further Island community.
- In partnership with Cairns Hockey – mentor relationships between Island communities and Cairns Clubs are looking to be developed to build pathways for future opportunities for young people to advance in the sport.
