Remote Hockey Program develops Youth Mentor and Leadership Program

The Remote Program began a Youth Mentor and Leadership Program in 2009 and has plans to continue the development with identifying young leaders from the mainstream hockey programs and invite them to travel to the remote communities to share experiences, speak about opportunities and encourage continuing development

Matt Cook aged 15 in 2009 umpired the final of the Under 13 Boys State Hockey Champonships and was invited through the Remote Program to share his experiences with the young people of the Gulf Savannah.

Matt Cook plays in the Sunshine Coast Hockey Competition, umpires locally and assists with coaching. He has represented Sunshine Coast in th past.

Matt Cook attends Matthew Flinders Anglican College at Buderim and has ambitions of working in the sports administration and management area in the future.

The Program will continue to develop in 2010 and identify more young leaders to take part. If you are between 15-18, involved in hockey and want to be part of this program, email a CV to Julie McNeil @

Opportunities exist to travel to remote, indigenous and/or Torres Strait Island communities and take on the role as youth mentor.
